Sprint Sponsering Ads in Free Realms for Free Items !!

On Freerealms.com, Sprint and others are sponsering ads that you click on and watch an Ad spot and then gives you a code for a free item. One of the good items is the Panda Mask. It is trickey though, sometiems it works and sometimes it gives you an error and no code.

    Free Realms ~ Spooktacular!!

Free Realms Spooktacular update is coming soon. Here is a post by the Free Realms Creative Director Laralyn McWilliams on her blog.

I can’t believe it October already! Time flies when you’re having fun!

October 28th will officially be six months after the launch of Free Realms, and we’re working hard on new features and fun additions for the game. There’s a major, mostly unannounced new minigame coming that I’ll be talking about soon… but right now we’re all excited about our favorite October event: Halloween and the next Free Realms game update, SUPER SPOOKTACULAR!

The Free Realms team loves Halloween, and you can tell just by looking at the game. What other virtual world lets you dress up in fun costumes for so many different jobs? From all-pink ninjas to pixie bananas to the limited edition Fourth of July Uncle Sam suit, you can tell the Free Realms team loves costumes!

We love Halloween so much that team members hand-crafted their own Free Realms themed costumes based on the panda pet costume and robgoblin npcs before the game ever launched!

So, we’re going all out for Halloween, as our first major live event. I don’t want to spoil too many surprises, but the costumes are awesome. Our artists have pulled out all the stops to create some of the most fun Halloween costumes I’ve ever seen in an online game. Here are two of my favorites: the vampire and the witch!

For traditionalists, we also include actual Halloween costumes—the kind you wear when you go trick-or-treating, including masks!

Costumes are just the beginning, though. You’ll find Halloween decorations all across Sacred Grove, along with special quests and even a new themed match three minigame!

Please join us throughout October to celebrate Halloween and the six month anniversary of Free Realms. Thanks for help making our virtual world a great place to call home!

Free Realms ~ Goal Time Update !!

Free Realms is getting ready to release the highly anticipated Goal Time update which will introduce the new profession for the Soccer Job called Soccer Star which will have 20 levels.

We are getting various tidbits of info on how the job will actually work. Free Realms Game Designer Margaret Krohn has an article on MMORPG.com that explains alot about this new exciting job.

There will be a quest line of tiers that you and your team will progress through and challenge harder and harder teams. Also, throughout the quest line you will have acess to 2 outfits complete with shorts, jersey, cleats, shin guards, and a bandana. Also you can purchase upgrades through the SC Store. Also, you can spend tickets to get some gear in the vaults.

All your stats will come via the gear and shards. So the choice of gear for your position is definately important. So, you may have multiple sets of gear for the various positions you could play, which makes this job more interactive in nature.

The stats come in 5 different powers: kick power (for strikers), footwork (for speed with the ball), speed (for speed without the ball), toughness (for defensive), and tackle power (for defensive). Also there are dodge and charge abilities. Dodging lets you avoid getting tackled and charge will let you kick the ball hard and do some fancy cool kick animations like Tornado Kicks, Headers, etc.

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Different uniforms will be available, along with upgrades like special effects "snow frosted particles".
  • Single player vs computer generated players OR guild vs friends.
  • It will be a top-down view, always looking at opponents goal, backing up to see your goal.
  • Some moves are: Slide tackle, Tornado kicks and Headers (these will become available as you level up)
  • Power boost and speed boosts will be on the field for you to run and grab
  • Each half will be 4 or 5 minutes long

Free Realms Hits 5 Million !!

Free Realms reached 5 million users !! Smed confirmed this at the GDC in his keynote. This game is slowly closing in on the juggernaut that is WoW, World of Warcraft. Here is the press release.

Tomorrow in Austin, Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) president John Smedley will make it official. The company's free-to-play, kid-friendly PC game Free Realms has passed the five million registered users mark -- and surprisingly, it did so sometime last month, says Smedley.

The news of the game hitting the five million mark -- or rumors of same -- have been part of the game industry lexicon for so long, the milestone hardly comes as a surprise (although it is interesting to note the game tallied its five millionth registered user in August, not July as many game analysts had projected). Still, the accomplishment is a huge win for Smedley and the Free Realms team.

Since SOE released the game in late April, Free Realms has ramped on an exceedingly steep curve, adding a million gamers a month to its registered-user tally.

What might actually come as a surprise, however, is just how hard Sony Online staff works at maintaining the white-hot streak of customer acquisition. According to Smedley, kid-focused MMOs is not a segment for the laid back or investment-averse.

"This is a market where you have to stay fresh, and you have to stay ahead of the competition in a way that you don't have to do with your core MMOs," Smedley told VirtualWorldsNews.com this evening.

Smedley (right) calls the under-13 market which gravitates to Free Realms' unique style of cartoony, adventure-heavy gameplay and questing "definitely a tough market."

One where you need to be proactive as a marketer, unafraid to allocate resources, and constantly on the leading edge as an advertiser, he adds. "You have to be willing to spend the money and stay with your investment," Smedley says.

Smedley, who has been SOE's president since 2001, gives the impression that while he's up for the challenge of maintaining Free Realm's pace, it wasn't fully understood just how committed he and his SOE colleagues were going to have to be to do so.

"Because kids' mind hare is so constantly inundated with new games, new things on TV, it's literally necessary to remind them [about the game] on a daily or weekly basis," Smedley says.

The competition for mindshare, which he is says is on the rise, is mostly other games.

"On TV you see a Free Realms commercial immediately followed by a Wizards 101 commercial, immediately followed by a commercial for Disney's ToonTown or Club Penguin. You see this huge, dramatic amount of advertising for kids and it's definitely something you have to stay on top of."

Part of the problem is the ease of attracting kids. "It's so easy to get kids' mindshare," he emphasizes, "they'll quickly go from one thing to the next. It's definitely a very, very different marketing experience than it is for the rest of our core games."

One element of the business which Smedley believes gives Sony an advantage over other game makers competing for the same audience is the degree to which SOE analyzes gamer data.

"We've instrumented literally every single aspect of Free Realms in ways that few if any game has ever done," Smedley says. "We report every click every person does when they register." As a result of that focus, the team of five full-time data crunchers found (earlier in the launch) that 40 percent of the people registering were opting out on one particular screen. It seems that asking a 10-year-old for his or her birthday was a showstopper. "Ten-year-olds don't know what their birth year is," says Smedley.

But those tweaks are behind SOE now. For Smedley and the game's live team, now it comes down to building on success. First, there's ongoing research: "We are constantly bringing kids into our usability lab and product focus lab…on a monthly basis we have a bunch of new kids coming in."

Then there are brand extensions, which Smedley isn't shy about talking about. Of course, Topps has the Trading Card Game license, but Smedley hints at larger deals yet to be inked. "We are talking to some different manufacturers about working with us on plush and a few other toy lines," Smedley says.

And there is the leveraging of lessons gleaned from Free Realms that can be put against other, new games from SOE. "We have other games in this space that are coming next year." Built on the success of Free Realms, yes, but different games completely, Smedley says.

For the record, Smedley and SOE are releasing some interesting user data tomorrow as well, specifically the top five marketplace items:

    1. Free Realms Digital Booster Pack
    2. Humongous Health Potion
    3. Skeletal Hoodie
    4. Humongous Replenishing Potion
    5. Humongous Energy Potion

And the game's most popular jobs:

    1. Brawler
    2. Pet Trainer
    3. Demo Derby Driver
    4. Kart Driver
    5. Chef

Additionally, Smedley updated some of the game's demographics, stating 67 percent of players are male and 33 percent are female. "We were shooting for more females, but that's way better than the MMO audience which is [typically only] 15 percent female," says Smedley. He added that Free Realms stats show females outpurchase males by a 30-40 percent margin, and that 51 percent of Free Realms gamers are under 13, with around 75 percent under 18.

Free Realms Tiny Head Cheat Code

Another cheat code has been found similar to the Bobble Head cheat code we posted a while back. This one is freaky looking and shrinks your head like in Beetlejuice. These codes only make the changes on your computer screen so all characters with heads will have a large head or a small head. It does not change how others see you, only how you see others. It is a cool cheat code and one I find worthy of mentioning here...

To get this view in simply type in /OMGLILIMH.
And the bobble Head cheat code is /ABSNBD.

Have fun with these codes and check back for more updates.

Free Realms ~ Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Sony is releasing a new movie on Sept. 18th called 'Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs'. To advertise for this movie they are using in game quest events for players to collect raining meatballs and receive an item to turn themselves into a rolling meatball. Kinda cool :) All the quest information below is from TheVoidRose on the Freerealms forums.

First, you must find the FFA Rep. in Seaside, Farnums Farm, or Lakeshore to receive the collection quests for the raining meatballs.
    Second, Complete all 3 quests.
Third, visit Helga Humbleloaf in Sanctuary to learn the recipe to make the meatballs.
Fourth, eat the food you made and you will be a meatball for 30 min.

    Here are the announcements...

"Odd looking clouds have been spotted off the coast of Seaside. All swimmers are advised to stay out of the water untill the storm has passed."

"Heavy rain is expected to fall north of Lakeshore. This has been a report from your Sacred Grove weather service."

"Clouds have been spotted forming over Farnum's Farm. Chance of rain is high."

    Lakeshore - Corn/Celery(confirmerd) ~ Meatballs(confirmed) ~ Cherrys/Strawberrys(confirmed)

    Seaside - Corn/Celery(confirmed) ~ Meatballs(confirmed) ~ Cherrys/Strawberrys(confirmed)

    Farnum's Farm - Cherrys/Strawberrys(confirmed) ~ Corn/Celery(confirmed) ~ Meatballs(confirmed)

    Log of Rain times:

    5th rain lasted 3 minutes
    6th rain lasted 3 minutes
    7th rain lasted 3 minutes
    8th rain lasted 3 minutes
    9th rain lasted 3 minutes(/end)
I conclude rain fall last 3 minutes each.

Order and Drop is Completly random, but with Lakeshore and Seaside being more likely to be hit with Corn and Celery.

    Log of time between rains:

    7-8 About 15 Minutes
    8-9 About 15 Minutes
    9-10 About 15 Minutes
    10-11 About 15 Minutes
    11-12 Exactly 16 Minutes
    12-13 Exactly 16 Minutes
    13-14 Exactly 16 Minutes
    14-15 Exactly 16 Minutes
    15-16 Exactly 16 Minutes(/end)
I have concluded time between rains is 16 Minutes.

    ~~Side notes~~

-Started August 18th at 00:00 Central

-The NPCs in the Seaside were running in chaos(Boombox Dancers, Campfire Bunch), NPCs by the bridges in Lakeshore, Animals near Papa Salt along with Cleetus Farnum.

-Rainfall takes exactly a minute to start after being announced.

-Seaside does drop ALOT more food.

-After the 3 minutes mark, all rained food remaining on the floor disappears.

-20 Meatballs, 12 Corn, 12 Celery, 12 Strawberrys, and 12 Cherrys are needed to complete all 3 of the FFA Rep's quest. Each quest rewards a Shirt that has the "Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs" logo.

-After completeing all 3 quest, you can learn "Spaghetti and Meatballs" for chef from "Helga Humbleloaf" in Sanctuary.

-"Spaghetti and Meatballs" Requires more Falling Ingridients to make, You can trade the ingridients to Helga Humbleloaf(Quest) to get each item for the Dish. 24 Meatballs, 12 corn, 12 celery, 12 Strawberrys, 12 Cherrys(4 Meatballs, 1 Spaghetti, 1 Onion, 1 Tomato Sauce).

-"Spaghetti and Meatballs" turns the player into a giant meatball for 30 minutes.

There's a new card duelist in town. His name's Dominic, and he's in Briarwood helping Sir Wellington keep an eye on his archeological dig site. There have been thefts and attacks at the site, and Wellington needs help protecting it.

Dominic is the first link in a new card duelist quest chain. (You can get the new quest from Poe Tatters in Sanctuary.) While playing through the new quest, you'll meet new card duelists – and see a number of cards you've never seen before. No, the duelists aren't cheating by making up their own cards. These cards are previews from the brand new second set!

That's right, there's a whole new set of cards on the way! There is a bunch of new game mechanics in the second set, some of which are previewed in the new duelist quests. You could wait patiently to see the cards when they're played against you – or you could read on for an overview some of the new hotness from the second set!

    Crush
One of the major new mechanics of the second set is the concept of "crushing" your foe in a battle. In order to "crush," your creature must not only win the battle, but must win by 4 or more. If you do, you gain an extra bonus effect – scoring an extra card, for example, or readying your creatures. With crush effects in play, you might find yourself playing tricks even when you're already winning. Winning isn't everything – not if you can win and crush at the same time.

    Trickster
The second set also introduces "Trickster" creatures, which changes the way you think about defense. While a creature with the Trickster keyword is attacking, its foe uses its attack instead of its defense. For example, if a Trickster attacks Changeling Rock Warrior (which has 1 attack and 4 defense), the Warrior uses its attack (just 1) in place of its defense (its now-unused 4).

By swapping its foe's defense for its attack, a Trickster turns your opponent's low attack/high defense "wall" creatures into easy targets. But watch out for those high attack creatures for which Chaos is so famous. Attacking Shadow Talon Archer with a Trickster would be a mistake; not only does it have 3 attack, but its power-up gives an additional 3 attack for one blue gem. You'd be much better off attacking the archer's 1 defense with a non-Trickster creature.

    Artifact Shards
There are four artifact shards in the second set – one for each sphere – and they feature prominently in the new quest line! What do these powerful artifacts have to do with Dominic and Sir Wellington? You'll have to play through the quest and find out for yourself.

What we can tell you is that the artifact shards are represented in the trading card game by new resource cards. These resources actually come into play zapped, and only take effect when you ready them. We'll be talking more about these ticking time bombs of arcane fury in the future, so watch this space for updates.

    And Much More!
Like the new card duelist challenges themselves, this has been just a small preview of the cool new cards coming in the second set. There will be plenty more information on the new set in time, but for now, track down Poe Tatters and see if he has a new quest for you!

Free Realms - TCG - Blacksmiths

In keeping with our Free Realms TCG Stradegy posting yesterday, I bring you another post on a specific type of deck, the cards in it, and what to look for when building a deck (avg gem flip).

Blacksmiths are cool. Sure, they're not a combat job, but would you like a weapon custom built just for you? See your local Blacksmith.

This deck builds on the awesome coolness of the Blacksmith job and includes Sanctuary celebrities like Nirvi and Poe Tatters.

I always try to get the highest average gem flip with my Machine decks, and this one is no exception -- at 2.9 it's pretty good. You might notice that there are no 2-cost creatures included. When you're in search of high flips, you want to use as few 1-gem creatures as possible. The "skip 2's" philosophy says, "I can always play two 1-cost's on turn 2, so what's the big deal?"

How did that Kart Driver get into my Blacksmith deck? Well, the problem is, that card is just too good to sit in my collection. It keeps screaming out at full speed and ending up in my deck anyway.
You'll also find the amazing trick Breakthrough in this deck. What trick has a better effect than "score a card"? I can't think of one. You'll be cool when you play this on defense to win the game!

    Smiths 'R' Us Deck

    Creatures:
    3 x Armorsmith
    3 x Assistant Smith
    3 x Smoky Blacksmith
    3 x Weaponsmith
    3 x Kart Driver
    2 x Nirvi
    2 x Poe Tatters

    Resources:
    3 x Discovery
3 x From the Trash Bin
    3 x Under the Hood

    Tricks:
    3 x Hammer Strike
    3 x Spring Forward
    3 x Squeaky Wheel
    3 x Breakthrough

    Free Realms - TCG Tactics

One of my favorite parts of the Free Realms MMORPG is the Trading Card Game. Growing up with Magic: The Gathering, I have always had a fondness for TCG's. I played M:TG for a while, then the Wheel of Time CCG and a plethora of others along the way as well. Something about collecting cards and building a mean deck to beat your oppenant to a pulp is fun for me :) So, with that, I'll be posting some Free Realms TCG tactics articles from time to time.

    Deck Building:

There are three types of cards in Free Realms TCG: creatures, resources, and tricks. One of the questions you might ask when building a deck is, “how many of each of type should I use?” It’s a tough question, because there’s definitely no one right answer – particularly when a given deck might require a “custom mix.” Here’s the approach that suits me best; you can try it out and see if it’s right for you.

Creatures are by far the most important card type. You want one to play every single turn, if not two or three each turn as the game progresses. I rate creatures so highly that they make up more than half of every deck I build. In a 40-card deck, I usually use 22 creatures.
This next part is where my approach to deck building differs from many other players. Of those 22 creatures, I make six of them heroes. People have asked me, why would I want so many expensive heroes that don’t help me early in the game? My answer to them is, they do help me. Heroes have four gems, which makes them the best flip you can get in battle. Better still, heroes always mix gems of multiple colors. Most decks include creature power-ups of more than one color, and in most cases, a flipped hero can trigger any of them.
It’s not that I don’t want to actually play my heroes. In fact, that’s another reason I stock so many: I want to be sure I have one in my hand by my fifth turn so that I can play it. Heroes are good if you flip them. They’re good when you play them. Why wouldn’t I use that many?

The other 18 cards in my 40 card deck are devoted to tricks and resources. And here, the split between the two does change a bit for me from deck to deck. Most often, though, I’ll make more than half of them tricks: 10 tricks and 8 resources.

Resources are great cards, and can really define your strategy. But you’re also only able to play one each turn. If you have more than two resources in your starting hand, or ever have more than one in your hand after your first couple turns, then you probably have too many resources in your deck. That resource you’re holding that you can’t play could instead be a creature or trick that you can play. Through some trial and error, I’ve found that 8 resources in a 40 card deck usually feels right to me.

So that leaves 10 tricks. Like resources, you probably always want the choice to play one. But you might have more than one battle in a turn, and also fight battles during your opponent’s turn. That’s why it makes sense to me to have a few more tricks than resources.
I tend to keep my decks as close to 40 cards as I can, but if I were to push higher, I’d keep thinking about my “more than half” approach. I want creatures to be more than half of my deck, and tricks to be more than half of what’s left.

Give my mix a try and see if you like it. You may find it works for you too, or at least helps you hone in on what does. Once you have your own “standard mix,” it will make deck building much quicker and easier, so you can get back to action!

Free Realms - How To Level Kart Racer Fast !!

There is a nifty little video going around here on how to level up your Kart Racing Profession to level 20 quickly.

Basically, what you do is go to a Race Track and enter the Kart Race Lobby, Create a 5 player Race, turn off Enable AI, set laps to 5, and then start the Race before anyone else joins it. You will always come in 1st place and it will level up the Race Kart job for you.

I admit, this sounds boring as you'd probably have to 50 of these races to max it, but hey, it beats some of the impossibly hard quest lines for Racing that they have.

Now we just need a shorty level for Demo Derby :)

    Free Realms Game Update Delay

For those of us who play Free Realms by SOE are 'in-the-know', we've been expecting a big game update this week for the Demo Derby and Race Kart professions. Well, this is going be delayed until next week according to Pex on the Forums due to some bugs they have recently discovered. Better late then never I guess...

As many of you know, we were planning to launch the racing update this week. We hoped to have it done for a Wednesday or Thursday evening release.

As can sometimes happen, there were some bugs that we couldn't work out in time, so we've had to delay things. We don't want to push such a big update on Friday as there won't be a full staff to handle any issues that arise on a Saturday or Sunday, so we are now planning on a Monday or Tuesday evening release. It all depends on when its ready to go.

I know it's hard to wait. We're also REALLY looking forward to this update. We just want to make sure everything is as good as possible before we launch it live.

We apologize for the delay and thank you for your understanding.

So, there we have it, officially delayed until next week :(

In other news, Smed has confirmed at ComicCon in San Diego that Free Realms has about reached the 5 million mark. I suppose we will be getting another party pack to commemorate this milestone. Yay!!

Also, Senior Artist, FloydBishop, has confirmed that in the Green Lantern comic book that is being handed out at the ComicCon has a Free Realms Ad with a free item code on the inside cover...

If you're at Comic Con in person, be sure to check inside the front cover of the Green Lantern comic book they've been handing out. There's a Free Realms ad there with a special code.

If anyone is there and has the comic witht he code, please reply here and post it.

    Free Realms ~ What's New

There is some interesting Free Realms development news from Sony Online Entertainment’s annual Fan Faire in Las Vegas. In his State of the Game address, SOE President John Smedley revealed some tidbits on what our players can anticipate seeing in the future.

There will be new content for the Kart Racer and Demolition Derby Driver jobs, with 40 new quests. These new quests will open up the advancement track for both jobs allowing players to get to level 20 and acquire some cool new gear and abilities.
Also announced is a new job coming later this year: Soccer Star. This new job will be part of the soccer fields which have been visible in the game, but not yet accessible. A Soccer Star will be able to take to the field alone or with guild members (in matching uniforms) in this brand new action-packed mini-game that promises to bring a whole new level of competition to Free Realms.
Also revealed was concept art for a new desert themed area.
This new area will be the homeland of the Dwarves and include a new job: Druid.

For TCG fans, a special service will be rolled out which allows you to put your character’s portrait on a physical trading card that can be mailed to your home. Give cards to friends so they can use the special code to get a digital version of your unique card!
